POLICE ARE WARNING car rental companies to stop leaving their cars with keys and parking cards in them at the airport so as to cut down on recent incidents of theft there.
“There had been a number of reported thefts of vehicles from the airport car park in the past. When investigated, they recognised it was those hired vehicles from various car rental companies who had arranged to leave the cars there,” police public relations officer, Acting Inspector Rodney Inniss, told the NATION yesterday.
His office had initially issued a press release late last month alerting the public of the dangers.
He added visitors would leave the cars in the airport car park, but people who were not the owners were driving them away.
“We have active ongoing investigations, so we thought we would have sent out a release warning people who park their vehicles to reduce liability. We asked the airport to have better cameras and what’s not so that it wouldn’t happen. However, the airport said those vehicles are not connected to their institution, so it is private rentals who are doing this and it needed to be curbed,” he said.
