For the?second occasion this year, Sunset Vacation and Tours Cyclone upstaged their neighbours and staunch arch-rivals Newbury Province in the Barbados Cricket League’s (BCL) 50-over competiton.
After scoring a narrow victory when the teams clashed in the semi-final of the Twenty20 earlier in the season, Cyclone returned yesterday to register a much easier triumph in the final of the C. O. Williams/Mitchie Hewitt Champion Of Champions competition.
Man-Of-The-Match Omar Wiggins lifted Cyclone to a competitive total of 128 after they were invited to bat on the slow pitch and heavy outfield.
Wiggins, who formerly represented YMPC at the First Division level stroked 31 (one four, three sixes) before coming back to capture one wicket for 18 runs from seven consecutive overs.
He also held two well-judged catches in the outfield as Newbury were dismissed for 110 with seven balls remaining.
Opening batsman Edwin Vaughn led the batting for Cyclone, stroking three fours in 34 while Byron Morris (2-11), captain Ryan Worrell (2-14) and Jimmy Thomas (2-23) were the leading bowlers for Newbury.
Cyclone skipper Theodore Thomas and veteran Inspector of Police Ian Branch stifled the scoring when Newbury replied, returning identical bowling figures of 7-1-19-2.
They shared four of the first five wickets with Conrad Drakes, brother of former West Indies fast bowling allrounder Vaspert Drakes, falling by the run-out route.
Newbury lost their eighth wicket in the 25th over with 49 runs still needed but a fighting ninth wicket stand between Rondell Springer and Romell Cyrus temporarily kept their hopes alive until the former holed out to Wiggins at deep midwicket for 35.
Another veteran, David Carrington, bowling left arm spin, captured two wickets for 26 as Cyclone made up for their loss in the final of the Twenty20 competition.
