‘Hands alone can’t do job’

HANDS ALONE CANNOT RID the beaches of the prevalent Sargassum seaweed. What is needed is heavy equipment.

Yesterday’s hands-on effort, though valiant, evoked recognition by the general manager of the National Conservation Commission, Keith Neblett, that the NCC wants to source heavy equipment to deal with the annual influx.

“We recognise it just cannot be manual labour. We have to mechanise without damaging the beach,” said Neblett.

He was on hand at Hastings Beach, Christ Church, which was being cleaned by the Coast Guard and the Bridgetown branch of the Optimist Club of Barbados. He noted there was still a lot of seaweed in the surf and said the weekend effort was just part of a “big blitz” national clean-up.
