Several children gave their own special salute to Barbados yesterday. Cubs, brownies, blossoms and beavers from across the island formed a human number 40 and draped themselves in a flag at the Garrison Savannah to show just how much they love Barbados.

IT WAS A flag-waving party with a difference as several patriotic Barbadians and visitors joined in marking this island's 40th anniversary of Independence.
People of all ages, some in their Sunday best, others casually attired, could be seen with miniature flags, full-size flags, bandannas, umbrellas and clothing all bearing the symbols and colours of this Independent nation gold, ultramarine and black.
Those who made their way to the Garrison Savannah with their families returned to the spot where Errol Barrow declared Barbados free from Britain, on November 30, 1966.
They showed their appreciation of the drill skills demonstrated by the troops on parade with loud cheers and the constant clicking and flashing of cameras.
They were happy there was sunshine but many came prepared for showers
should there be any. Folks then lined the street along the Garrison, onto Bay Street, outside Government Headquarters and through Bridgetown to Independence Square where the parade ended.
Along the way children were thrilled by the mounted policemen, vendors at various locations sold Independence memorabilia bearing the number 40, along with the treats which children love.
The City was alive with activity, testament to the saying that "life begins at 40".
Given the number of young people involved in the parade and on hand to witness it, this "life" has begun with pride and enthusiasm from those are the country's future.
