A $400 000 SECURITY PROGRAMME is being implemented at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH).
Chairman of the board Horace Cobham told the MIDWEEK NATION by telephone from Miami yesterday that some aspects were already in place, and others should be by monthend.
The "comprehensive" programme includes the installation of cameras throughout the hospital which will be monitored around the clock, the use of access and control devices in sensitive areas like wards and operating theatres, car access passes, improved lighting and a team of "properly trained" security guards who would respond to any incident.
It would also see the metal detectors or walk through scanners, installed back in 2002, finally being turned on, said Cobham.
"It is vitally important that we provide security for the staff and the patients. The board recognises it is important.
"There was a delay in the company getting some of the equipment but it is due shortly and the cameras should be installed and operating before the end of the month," he added.
On Sunday, president of the Barbados Nurses Association, Paulette Drakes, appealed for greater protection for nurses.
She said they were being attacked on the wards by patients and their relatives, at bus stops, and in the car parks at the QEH.
"I totally agree that we have to be concerned about security for staff and patients and I'm satisfied that once we have completed the programme, that we will be able to [provide better security] through technology and other means," Cobham said.
