BLP to focus on land issue

The Barbados Labour Party's (BLP) record on land distribution will be a major talking point when it holds its 68th annual conference at Harrison College on Saturday and Sunday.
At least three Government ministers will tackle the subject in presentations to the meeting Saturday, conference chairman Rudy Grant said during a news briefing at BLP headquarters on Roebuck Street, the City, yesterday.
Deputy Prime Minister Mia Mottley, the Minister of Economic Affairs and Development, will report on the Urban Development Commission (UDC). The UDC builds and repairs homes and helps tenants buy land at Government-subsidised prices.
Minister of Housing and Lands Reginald Farley and Minister of Social Transformation Trevor Prescod will also report to the conference, which will view a video presentation detailing "what as a party we have been doing to facilitate land acquisition" by Barbadians, Grant reported.
One highlight of the conference which has as its theme, Continuing To Make Life Better In Barbados, will be Prime Minister Owen Arthur's address at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
Arthur, party chairman, and the entire executive are being returned to office unopposed, Grant said.
The meeting comes at a time of mounting political activity in Barbados, amidst speculation about when Arthur will call a general election.
However, general secretary Dr William Duguid said: "This is not an election conference." (TY)
