BAPE still awaiting answers

The Barbados Association of Professional Engineers (BAPE) still wants certain questions answered about the ABC Highway project.
In a Press release issued by president Roger Blackman yesterday, BAPE rejected a newspaper report last Saturday that indicated it was a co-signee of a joint statement with the Ministry of Public Works and highway contractors 3S stating a number of issues had been solved.
A meeting of the three parties was convened October 11, after BAPE had publicly stated its concerns about the project, citing six areas that needed urgent attention.
According to Blackman, BAPE was informed at the October 11 meeting that matters about the way the project had developed could not be discussed at a meeting of that level.
"The highway project team expressed their confidence in the design
of the highway, and sought to address some of the concerns that were raised," Blackman said yesterday.
But he also said BAPE was still seriously concerned about many of issues, especially relating to public safety.
BAPE has again invited 3S and its project team to make a special presentation on the main designs of the project, after which questions would be posed by members of the engineering fraternity.
"We believe that this will help bring a clearer level of transparency
and accountability
on this project, which would have a major impact on all Barbadians,"
Blackman said.
The president noted a similar invitation had already been sent to 3S and its project team, but it had not been accepted. (BA/PR)
