Child labour and prostitution were among matters discussed by teachers of Alma Parris Secondary School yesterday as Teachers Professional Day was observed throughout the island.
Dennis Murray of the Ministry of Labour facilitated the discussion which principal Cobin Hinds described as very important.
Hinds said these issues had to be discussed since they had a significant impact on Barbadian children.
In addition, clinical and counselling psychologist Mabel Ekiyor shared information about disruptive behaviour and intervention strategies.
Hinds noted that teachers were not trained in dealing with conditions such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and therefore needed to rely on expert knowledge.
Over at Coleridge and Parry Secondary School, about 60 teachers participated in workshops about information technology.
Network resources, academic software and PowerPoint presentations were among the topics discussed.
Percival Beckles who conducted the workshop on network resources said that it was very important for teachers to become more efficient in the use of technology.
Principal Alwin Adams said every teacher needed to be equipped with such knowledge in order to diffuse it across the curriculum.
