Husbands second after triple wins

TORONTO Barbadian riding ace Patrick Husbands enjoyed triple success at Woodbine on Sunday but missed out in the featured Woodbine Mile.
Chasing his fourth Woodbine championship title, Husbands captured the second, seventh and ninth races and although he had to settle for third in the CAN$1 million (BDS$1.8 million) Woodbine Mile, he improved his position in the current jockeys' standings.
He moved his winning tally for the season to 82, ten behind leading rider Emma-Jayne Wilson while climbing from third to second in the standings.
Wilson narrowly won the afternoon's first race aboard the 11-to-2 bet Sweetamygee, but Husbands responded quickly and won the CAN$62 400 (BDS$112 300) second race on the 5-2 favourite Blue Deputy over 6-1/2 furlongs in one minute 18.01 seconds.
Husbands rallied Blue Deputy from behind and won by a neck over the 9-2 chance Retaliate with Jamaican jockey Shane Ellis riding.
Husbands collected his second win when the two-year-old colt Here To Please captured the CAN$62 800 (BDS$113 000) fifth race over six furlongs as the 2-1 favourite.
Here To Please won by a length in 1:12.52 under Husbands.
Husbands, who won Woodbine jockeys' titles in 1999, 2000, and 2002, completed his triple with victory astride the 3-2 favourite Howaboutrightnow in the CAN$70 700 (BDS$127 260) seventh race over 1-1/16th miles.
Racing in front from the start, Husbands pushed the three-year-old filly to a 5-1/2 length victory in 1:46.84.
In the rich Woodbine Mile, visiting top American jockey Pat Valenzuela guided the Italy-bred Becrux to victory by a neck at odds of 8-1 in the one-mile event, edging Rebel Rebel (6-1).
Husbands was third with Ad Valorem (5-1), a further 1-1/4 lengths behind as Becrux surged to victory in 1:33.99. (CMC)
