BL&P: Staples on poles the problem
Published on: 1/24/08.
ELECTION DAY IS over but all over the country some candidates' posters are still up on Barbados Light & Power Company (BL&P) poles.
"The real problem is that a lot of the posters were removed but the staples are left there and that is where our concern is. If you look
at some of the poles there are staples that are existing from previous occasions.
"On this occasion there were quite a large number of posters," said chief marketing officer of the BL& P Stephen Worme, who added that more of them went up between January 8 and 15.
He reiterated that staples and nails posed a serious danger to linesmen climbing the poles.
"We really hope that those people who would have seen this [placing of election posters] going on do not think that they can now place posters on the poles. I'm hopeful that they do not follow suit," added Worme.
"The company's public education programme will continue regarding the placing of signs, posters and other notices and hopefully the public will understand the importance of not placing them on the poles", he said.
Asked if there was any action that could be taken, Worme said while placing signs on poles was against the Town Planning regulations and was illegal, it would have "to be tested".
"As far as I'm aware, it has not been tested as yet, but the time may come where we may have to do so, if it is something that we can't control otherwise, through the co-operation of individuals," Worme added.
The BL& P has more than 50 000 poles islandwide.
