STUDENTS from the temporarily amalgamated Bay and St Paul's Primary schools observed Arbor Day by planting trees on the premises of Bay Primary School, yesterday.
The trees, part of the agricultural science programme, were donated by the National Conservation Commission (NCC). This is the second year the school will mark Arbor Day.
Agricultural science teacher at the school, Dave Brathwaite, said the programme would help to expose students to different types of locally grown fruits, will teach students how to care for trees and will complement the existing trees planted last year, which he said are "growing quite nicely."
This year's Arbor Day theme is Treasured Resources Environmentally Enriching Society.
School principal Marielon Gamble said: "We are hoping to incorporate (the planting of foods into the health programme to work in relation with what you eat."
Agricultural science teacher atSt Paul's, Cliff King, also took part in the day's events. The trees planted were a star apple, carambola (five finger) and a neem tree, which is known for its medicinal properties. (AB-B)
