TWO BARBADIAN youths are among four receiving the inaugural Motorola/Association of Caribbean Commissioners of Police scholarships.
The lucky winners are Akilah Lashley and Shane Thompson.
Lashley, 19, accepted the US$5 000 scholarship cheque from Commissioner of Police Darwin Dottin at District "A" yesterday.
The daughter of Inspector Elphene Moore wants to pursue a four-year degree in architecture at the University of Technology in Jamaica.
"I was very surprised, and I really didn't expect to win since it is offered to everyone in the Caribbean. I just put my best foot forward . . . . I'm just elated, and thank God for giving me this opportunity to further my studies," the Harrison College student said.
Thompson, 21, is in his first year at the Hugh Wooding Law School in Trinidad. His cheque was accepted by his father Commandant of the Regional Police Training Centre, Mark Thompson.
Other winners were Carisma Tucker of The Bahamas and Denise Logan of Belize.
The scholarships are open to children whose parents belong to the police community and "do not have the means or are unable to acquire the necessary funds to continue on their career path". (YB)
