KINGSTON, Jamaica Jamaican Usain Bolt recorded a stunning 2008 world best time of 9.76 seconds to win the men's 100 metres at the fifth Jamaica International Invitational meet at the National Stadium on Saturday night.
Generally considered a 200-metre specialist, the 21-year-old Bolt stormed to his quickest ever time over 100 metres while setting a new stadium record, erasing compatriot Asafa Powell's mark of 9.84 seconds.
His previous best time was 10.03 seconds.
Bolt's time, the first sub-ten-second clocking in this Olympic year, was also the second fastest time ever over 100 metres, bettered only by Powell's world record of 9.74 seconds. Bolt ran with a legal trailing wind of +1.8 m/s and held his nerve after two false starts to produce a blistering final 50 metres.
American Darvis Patton placed a distant second in 10.08 seconds and Antiguan Daniel Bailey (10.12) was third.
There was also a fast women's 100-metre sprint, ending in Jamaican Kerron Stewart running a career-best and world-leading 10.96 seconds.
There were two other world-leading runs, both coming in the 400-metre hurdles from Americans.
In the men's 400 hurdles, Trinidad and Tobago-born Kerron Clement won in 47.79 seconds, ahead of local star Danny McFarlane (48.74).
And Lashinda Demus landed the women's race in 54.83 seconds, chased by Jamaican Shevon Stoddart (55.68) and American Markita James (56.79). (CMC)
