AN ATTORNEY ACCUSED of stealing more than $1 million from two clients who were selling upmarket properties was allowed bail when he appeared in the Bridgetown Traffic Court yesterday.
Ernest Winston Jackman will, however, have to present himself to lawmen at District "C" Police Station twice a week as part of his bail. His passport was confiscated as part of his $250 000 two-surety bond.
Jackman, 53, of Wiltshire Plantation House, St. Philip, was not required to plead to stealing $678 414, which belonged to HEJ Ltd. between June 23, 2006 and March 5, 2007.
That charge allegedly related to the sale of a property and land at Lot 4, Maxwell Villas, Christ Church, belonging to John Huggins of HEJ Ltd.
He was also not required to plead to stealing $367 085 which was part of the proceeds of a Barbados National Bank cheque in the amount of $560 437, belonging to Foster Belle and payable to himself.
Belle, 75, was the owner of a $650 000 property at Inch Marlow, Christ Church, which was being bought to an Irish couple.
Prosecutor Inspector Martin Jones said he would not be objecting to bail on the condition that Jackman surrender his travel documents.
Jackman, who was represented by attorney Sir Richard Cheltenham, is due to return to court in October.
