Under-19s out of World Cup

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia West Indies Under-19s were booted out of the ICC Youth World Cup championship race when India whipped them by 50 runs in their Group "B" match at Kinrara Academy Oval yesterday.
Playing a captain's knock, Virat Kohli slammed an even hundred and spurred India to solid total of 265 for five off their 50 overs and West Indies innings folded for 215 off 47.5 overs.
The result condemned the Caribbean side to playing in the Plate (Consolation) event.
Needing to win the match and finish with a net run-rate superior to South Africa's, West Indies made a favourable start to their run-chase.
The attacking left-hander Kieran Powell smashed five hefty boundaries as West Indies sped to 44 in the sixth over.
But the 17-year-old Nevisian paid the price for his attacking approach and was dismissed for 29 off 20 balls.
Attempting a pull shot off the pacer Ajitesh Argal, he top-edged and lobbed a catch to the wicket-keeper.
It became 55 for two when Steven Jacobs, who lashed a hundred against Papua New Guinea earlier this week, also fell to Argal, trapped leg before wicket for seven.
Medium pacer Siddarth Kaul then dislodged captain Shamarh Brooks (16) and opener Adrian Barath (24) as West Indies dipped to 89 for four
in the 16th over.
The run-rate was encouraging but wickets were falling too quickly, stifling the West Indies prospects and although the attractive left-hander Darren Bravo and Devon Thomas kept hope alive for the Caribbean side with a 75-run fifth-wicket stand, a run-out to dislodge Bravo proved extremely damaging.
Bravo top-scored with 43 off 68 balls with four boundaries and Thomas gathered 32 off 50 balls.
Kaul picked up three for 37 off eight overs to lead India's bowling, supported by Ajitesh Argal (2-45) and Ravindra Jadeja (2-28).
Their start after being sent in by West Indies captain Brooks was tame and they lost Shreevats Goswami (2) lbw to the big St Vincent and the Grenadines pacer Dawnley Grant in only the second over with just three runs on the board.
Tanmay Srivastava joined Turuwar Kohli and they watchfully set about a recovery with a century partnership of 102 at just about four runs per over.
Kohli gathered 50 off 84 balls with four boundaries before a diving Jacobs clutched a sharp chance
as the right-hander drove powerfully into the off-side.
Srivastava went 11 runs later, run out by Jason Dawes for 51 off 75 balls with two fours and two sixes, to make the score 116 for three in the 28th over.
Virat then linked up with Saurabh Tiwary and delivered their team's second century-partnership of the innings. The former stroked a classy 100 off just 74 balls with ten fours and four sixes, three of his maximum hits coming off Brooks. (CMC)
