Everyone was seeing red at Carlton Cricket Club ground, Black Rock, St Michael yesterday.
Red House (Set B), powered by some outstanding performances by Gabiel Ellis in the girls' Under-15 Division, dethroned last year's champions Yellow House (Set A) when Coleridge & Parry held their Powerade-sponsored Inter-School sports day yesterday.
Red House, which started the day in the lead with 448.5 points, extended that to 783 points by the end of the day to beat Purple House (Set F) into second position with 554.5 points. Purple House had started the day in third position on 308 points.
Ellis was one of the outstanding performers at the meeting. She won all five of her races including the 400 metres in which she set a new school record, and placed second in her only field event, the long jump.
Her 400-metre time of 1:01.90 minutes bettered the record of 1:04.05 minutes set by Shari Cumberbatch in 2002. But, despite adding the 100, 200, 800 and 1 500 metres to her winning tally and amassing 58 points, she had to settle for second position behind Shakera Hall who finished with 62 points in the girls' Under-15 Division.
Hall won the long jump, high jump and discus and finished second to Ellis in the 100, 200, 400 and 1 500-metre events.
By virtue of establishing a new mark in the 400 metres, Ellis also won the Edward Cumberbatch 400 metres trophy.
The only other record to be erased yesterday came in the under-17 girls' 800 metres won by Green House's Shani Adams. Her time of 2:29.64 minutes improved on the 2:30.02 minutes set by Shari Cumberbatch in 2003.
Other outstanding performers for Red House were Dequan Adamson and Nicolaii Bovell, both of whom finished first and second in the Under-15 boys' Division with 44 and 38 points respectively; and Daneil Marshall, who totalled 55 points in finishing second behind Green House's Andre Harris (70 pts) in the boys' Under-20 Division.
Despite Red House's dominance, the victor ludorum title went to Andre Harris of Yellow House, who totalled 70 points with a win in the 800 metres, and second places in the 400 and 800 metres and long-jump.
Another outstanding perfomer was Green House's Shani Adams, who was described by PE teacher Don Small as having considerable CARIFTA potential.
Competing in the girls' Under-17 Division, Adams easily won that section with 62 points having registered wins in the 200, 400, 800, and 1 500 metres, and placed second in the 100 metres.
The most points by any athlete went to Doriann Patrick in the girls' Under-20 Division. She won seven of the eight events in which she participated for a total of 78 points.
Her wins came in the 100, 200, 800, 1 500-metre events, as well as the long jump, high jump, and shot put. She also finished second in the javelin throw.
