Coach blasted for 'praising the enemy'

ST GEORGE'S, Grenada A former cricket administrator has blasted national coach Dwayne Gill for publicly praising the Barbados team during Grenada's quarter-final clash in the Stanford 20/20 Tournament last week.
Claudius George, who served on the executive of the country's biggest cricket league, has taken issue with Gill for congratulating the Barbados team on their batting during a live interview with the boundary commentator while the game was still in progress.
Grenada, a semi-finalist in the inaugural event in 2006, suffered a 54-run defeat to Barbados in the match.
"I do not understand how you are in deep battle and you are looking to congratulate your enemy," George said during an interview on a local radio sports programme yesterday.
"I could have seen at the end of the game that question was asked and you said we did not play proper cricket but we must congratulate Barbados for the way they were able to put their innings together."
Gill, who lived and played cricket in Barbados for several years, was appointed national coach last year after the Grenada Cricket Association sacked former national wicketkeeper/batsman Raymond Duncan.
George said Gill should have exercised better judgement.
"The game was still in progress [and] Grenada was still bowling. I did not care how good Barbados was batting. I have listened to cricket for a million years and I have never heard [this before]," claimed George, also a local cricket commentator.
"During the course of a game he is saying we should congratulate our enemies for putting their game together. Mr Gill must have forgotten that the game was still on."
Both Barbados and Grenada are now out of the tournament. (CMC)
