Marshall after another title

NATIONAL TOP 16 WINNER ANTHONY MARSHALL will be hoping to add another title to his resumé when the men's finals of the ninth annual Pine Hill Dairy Tennis Championships are played at the Ocean View Courts, Hilton Barbados, at 3:30 p.m. today.
Marshall defeated Michael Date 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) in the first semi-final, while Russell Moseley was scheduled to play teenager Yannic Hooper to decide the other finalist. The veterans' final will also be played today.
Meanwhile, 16-year-old Gabriella Lopez, from The St Michael School maintained her dominance in the event, winning the Girls' Under-18 title and the Women's Open.
Earlier in the week she defeated Jodie Watson to take the former, and on Friday night, in a much anticipated match-up, she beat Sarah Lively, a former United States college-based player, 6-1, 6-2.
Lopez, a national soccer player who has also represented her school in basketball and track, displayed speed, fitness and agility to defeat the hard-hitting Lively.
She raced to a 3-0 lead in the first set before dropping one game, but re-focused and continued to run down what would have been winners in most other circumstances. She continued hitting angles mixed with solid ground-strokes to take the set 6-1.
Lively found some form and broke back early in the second after losing her first service game. The score was tied 2-2 and many games went to deuce. Lopez prevailed, but needed four match points, at 5-2, before eventually winning the game and the title.
Earlier, George Grant reached the final of the men's age 45 group with a straightforward victory over John Wilson, who was leading 4-2, serving in the first set when fatigue set in, and he failed to win another game. Grant will now take on either Sydney Lopez or Karl Holder in today's final.
Eleven-year-old Melena Lopez also beat the No. 2 seed Kareika Wharton 6-2, 6-4.
If the seeding runs true-to-form, Jackson Kerr is expected to reach the finals of the Boys' Under-16, and there is a possible match-up in the Under-18 Boys' against Seanon Williams, if he can get past the vastly improved Mykell Reifer in the semi-finals.
Kerr and Reifer have also reached the finals of the Under-18 Doubles and should play Kenton Gamble and Turé Skinner if the seeding go to form.
The doubles pair also have an opportunity to reach the final of the men's open but it will be a tall order as they will play the experienced team of Date and Kodi Lewis in the semi-finals tonight. (PR)
