Oistins in line for facelift

MAJOR CHANGES to the market, an improvement in environmental conditions and a cultural entertainment area are but a few of the planned changes
to "bring new life" to Oistins in the future.
These plans were revealed by MP for Christ Church South, Minister of Health Jerome Walcott, while speaking Sunday at the constituency's first branch meeting for the year at St Lawrence Primary School.
Walcott also said old Government buildings in the area, like the now unused hospital, would be mobilised. In addition, 22 vendors as well as ten coalpot vendors would be relocated next to Granny's restaurant.
The Oistins project, which is being undertaken by the Barbados Tourism Investment Inc., and the Bay Gardens project will begin in July.
Walcott, who was recently given responsibility for the Barbados Water Authority, also urged people to put into use grease traps, as grease in the sewage system could interrupt biological processes and cause an odour.
On the issue of Highway 7 and other roads in the area, Walcott said there was still some work to be done and he was in contact with the Ministry of Public Works (MPW). He asked constituents to realise he was not the minister responsible for public works and could only make suggestions.
Another important issue was the sluice gate in Worthing. It was destroyed recently but he said MPW assured him it would be rebuilt and officers trained in its proper use.
The area flooded last year during heavy rains because no one opened the gate to release the backed-up water. (CA)
