ST JOHN'S Barbados and Guadeloupe scored contrasting wins en route to lifting the men's and women's titles respectively at the Antigua leg of the Sizzlin' Sand Caribbean Sunsplash Series, staged at the Castaways Beach, Jolly Harbour, last weekend.
In an all-Barbados men's final, Elwyn Oxley and Gregory Gill were pushed all the way before beating Andrew Culpepper and Winston Gittens in straight sets, 21-16, 22-20.
Defending Sunsplash champions, Philippe Pignol and Robin Darchicourt of Guadeloupe finished third, as they defeated Danny Wilson and Gatashue Bonner of Jamaica in three sets, 21-17, 17-21, 15-13.
In the women's final, an all-French affair, Caroline Reb and Fanny Kartazynski of Guadeloupe dished out a 21-13, 21-19 defeat to Martinique's Valérie Chanteur and Severine Hardy-Dessource, to pick up top honours.
The Barbadian pair of Julia Lewis and Lauren Whitehall collected the third-place cheque with a 21-17, 21-18 hammering of Guadeloupe's Carole Rousset and Marie Villa.
Barbados will play host to the final event in the Sunsplash series at which November 4 and 5, where defending women's champs Karen Sutherland and Cindy Philips of Canada, along with the American duo of Michael Dipierro and Steve Grotowski, will headline the event. (CMC)
