Minister hopes to lure youth to farming
Published on: 2/27/08.
MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE and Rural Development Senator Haynesley Benn is looking forward to having a "young farmers" association and at least one 4H Club in every constituency in Barbados.
"I am a product of 4H . . . I joined in 1969 . . . I want to instil in the minds of our young people that agriculture is still a worthwhile occupation," he said.
Benn made these comments at the opening ceremony of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations' third annual meeting on the National Medium Term Priority Frameworks And Sub-Regional Priority Framework yesterday at Grand Barbados Beach Resort.
The minister reported there were several small island states dealing with challenges such as climate change and rising energy costs, but expressed the hope the working sessions would encourage "new dynamic approaches for the agriculture sector." (BGIS)
