Leaders differ on right approach to Cuba
Published on: 7/20/07.
THE Prime ministers of Barbados and Canada gave different perspectives of Cuba yesterday during a brief Press conference.
Canada's Stephen Harper said he had concerns about certain situations in Cuba and Canadian governments over the years had expressed concerns about aspects of governance and human rights there. He said Canada was promoting throughout the region values of open and free democratic society, modern prosperity and open markets, and common security challenges.
However, Arthur said Barbados had "respect for people's sovereignty and non-interference and the right of people to seek alternative paths to development".
He added Cuba needed to be integrated in the affairs of the hemisphere.
"My Government and the Caribbean governments as well have never approved of, nor never will support, unilateral sanctions proposed against Cuba and we look forward to the day when Cuba can be fully engaged not just in a bi-lateral relationship, but in all of the affairs of our hemisphere." (TM)
