Barbados, One China ties 'as strong as ever'
Published on: 3/5/08.
THE GOVERNMENT of Barbados remains committed to a One China policy. This reassurance was given to Chinese Ambassador, Liu Huanxing, during talks with Prime Minister David Thompson on Monday.
Noting that diplomatic relations were not determined at the level of political parties, Thompson said Government's commitment to China remained "as strong and as firm as it always was".
The Prime Minister and the ambassador discussed the possibility of enhancing the cultural exchange programme, which the former described as one of the best ways to build relationships between the two countries.
Huanxing agreed, and pointed out that in April, there would be a cultural tour to Barbados which would include acrobatics, dancing and singing.
He also expressed the hope that there would be increased cooperation between the two countries in other areas.
Thompson agreed and suggested that projects which would benefit the region as a whole should be considered, adding that he was "anxious" to see other Caribbean countries receive direct assistance from more developed countries with available resources.
Huanxing also took the opportunity to extend an invitation to Thompson to attend this year's Olympics in Beijing. (BGIS)
