THE SIXTH EDITION of the National Senior Games, which is set to run off at the National Stadium on Saturday, will require more stamina and speed than previous editions.
According to meet co-ordinator Rawle Clarke, instead of just a solitary open 1 500-metre event, there will be races over this distance in all age groups.
Clarke also said the Games, which are being sponsored by Carlton & A1 and Emerald City supermarkets and Banks Holdings, will have other new features.
"This year, we have included three cycling events for the masters over the 1 000, 2 000 and 4 000 metres distances and we have also strengthened the fun events, including throwing of the cricket ball," he said.
Clarke said competition would again be in the 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79 and 80 years-and-over age groups, with races from 100 metres to 1 500 metres, plus the field and fun events.
He said there would be prizes for the winner of each age group as well as the most outstanding male and female athlete.
Spectators can purchase tickets from CS Pharmacy in Broad Street, Bridgetown; Carlton & A1 Supermarket, Black Rock, St Michael; Emerald City Supermarket, Six Roads, St Philip; Fisherman's Pub, Speightstown, St Peter; Joe's Pharmacy, Oistins, Christ Church; Sports Connection in Mall Internationale, Haggatt Hall, St Michael, and at Sports & Games, The City.
Competitors will be vying for selection on the national senior team, which triumphed at the Huntsman World Senior Games in Utah, United States, last year, gaining 18 goal medals, 19 silver and 13 bronze.
In addition, Janita Austin and Ainsley Lovell set two world records in the 50-54 age group. (EZS)
