KINGSTON, Jamaica Ramone McKenzie and Nickel Ashmeade, triple medallists from last summer's IAAF World Youth Championships, were in winners' row on Saturday's final day of Jamaica's High School Track and Field Championships.
World Youth 200-metre champion McKenzie landed the Boys' Class One (Under-20) 400 metres, running out of lane eight in 46.61 ahead of Ricker Hylton (47.33) at the National Stadium.
However, in the 200 metres, considered the main race of the championships, displaying three World Youth medallists and one World Junior medallist, Ashmeade emerged the champion.
Ashmeade, who finished third behind McKenzie in the half-lap sprint in Ostrava, turned the tables with a hard-fought victory in 21.04 seconds against a negative 2.1 metres-per-second wind.
Over 20 000 fans watched McKenzie place second in 21.05 seconds, while World Junior 100-metre bronze medallist Yohan Blake, the world's fastest junior at 10.11 seconds, was third in 21.31.
Blake had won the 100 on Friday in 10.27 seconds.
In the Girls' Class Two (Under-18) 200 metres, Jura Levy completed the sprint double by taking the event in 24.48 to add to her championship record of 11.46 in the 100 metres. Antonique Campbell was second in 24.62.
Carrie Russell, the Beijing World Junior Championships 100-metre silver medallist, was fourth in 25.15.
In the Girls' Class Two 800, multiple CARIFTA champion Natoya Goule, who won the 1 500 metres, returned to take the two-lap event in two minutes 08.74 seconds.
Former CARFTA Under-17 champion Theon O'Connor took the Boys' Class One 800 in 1:51.15.
The Boys' Class One 110-metre hurdles went to Akeem Smith in 13.82, edging Kerion Stewart (also 13.82) in a photo finish.
The 14-year-old Adam Cummings, a 10.91 winner of the Class Three (Under-16) Boys' 100, and Levy, were named top performers of the meet, which was watched by former-Olympic stars Donovan Bailey, of Canada, and Trinidad and Tobago's Ato Boldon. (CMC)
