ZOUK LANDED the prestigious Triple Crown with an impressive, runaway victory in the United Barbados Derby at the Garrison Savannah yesterday.
Confidently ridden by Juan Crawford in the 2 000-metre event, Zouk picked up the running from Bachelor Boy, with Jamar Maughn up, just after the three-furlong marker and ran on to a memorable victory, and into the history books.
Bachelor Boy ran on well to finish second, just ahead of the third-placed First Edition, ridden by Jason Leacock; and the fourth-placed Border Secret, with Anderson Trotman up.
The Richard Edwards-owned, Naz Issa-trained filly became the first horse to win the $100 000 bonus for winning the Triple Crown, and only the second horse since Coo-Bird (1989) to win the three jewels which comprise the crown. Incitatus performed the feat in 1996.
And immediately after winning the Derby, Dave Blackman, chairman and managing director of United Insurance, presented owner Edwards with the beautiful United silver trophy and the $100 000 bonus cheque.
The presentation was witnessed by Richard Cozier of Banks Breweries, sponsors of the Banks Barbados Guineas, first leg of the Triple Crown; Michael Clarke of Roberts Manufacturing, sponsors of the Pinnacle Feeds Midsummer Classic, the second leg of the Triple Crown; and Barbados Turf Club president Francis Cozier, all of whom contributed to the $100 000 bonus purse.
Crawford's win on Zouk was his second of the day, as he had won earlier on Ribo Tango for trainer William Clarke and owner Lord Michael Taylor.
Two other jockeys landed two winners as well, these being Jason Leacock and Rico Walcott. Leacock scored on Storm Arrow and Sharp Impact, both for trainer Robert Peirce; while Walcott registered back-to-back wins on South Sea for trainer Liz Deane and Senor Clemente, also for Peirce.
