AS THE 2007 LOCAL POLO SEASON draws nearer Barbadian polo players continue their march for supremacy in the world of polo.
Last Sunday Barbados took on Mexico in the first of a three-game series at Holder's Hill grounds, described by many as the mecca of polo in Barbados.
At the end of the game the scorecard read Barbados 8, Mexico 4, and once again another overseas international team suffered at the hands of the Barbadian riders.
Leading the Barbadian charge was Richard Gooding with his 4-goal beaver trick including a hat-trick in the final chukka. Barbados highest ranked player, Danny Atwell, scored 3 goals and Philip Tempro 1 goal in the second Chukka.
For the Mexicans Juan Jaramillo scored a hat-trick, 1 goal in the first chukka, 2 in the second and Alejandro Gomez scored the other goal in the fourth and final chukka of the game.
Despite their loss Mexico played an excellent game. Several scoring opportunities were missed by both teams which could have resulted in a higher score card.
The Barbados squad was Gooding, Philip Tempro, Atwell and Roddy "Big Dogg" Davis. Mexico were represented by Enrique Fausto, Peter Zweger, Alejandro Gomez and Juan Jaramillo.
The preceding game between Team Rolex and The Royal Shop ended in a low-scoring affair with a 32 win for The Royal Shop. Oliver Williams and P.J. Davis scored 1 each for Rolex while Jason Selmo scored 1 and Mark Atwell slotted home 2 for The Royal Shop.
The second game of the series was played yesterday at Lion Castle Polo Estate in St Thomas at 3:30 p.m. (CH)
