Coming of age win for Tridents

IT WAS THE KIND OF BATTLE finals are meant to be made, a titanic tussle that brought together Tridents RFC and Renegades RFC in the inaugural Barbados Rugby Football Union Club Championship.
It also represented a coming of age or changing of the guard of the guardians of rugby in Barbados.
In an epic battle, Tridents eventually overcame a determined effort by Renegades to secure the challenge trophy which required sudden death extra time to settle the score. A last-minute try by Dale Cumberbatch ensured that the game which Renegades almost had in the bag, was sent into sudden death extra time.
It was also a good sign for rugby in Barbados as the Tridents team consisted of members of the former junior national squad which a couple of years ago would not have even posed a challenge to the now maturing Renegades' players.
To their credit the never-say-die attitude of Tridents bore fruit. Added to this was the fact that Tridents are a new club, formed this year under the management of Brian Duguid, and have not yet lost a game to any of the local clubs. (PR)
