Mystery break in Grenada 13 sentencing
Published on: 6/21/07.
ST GEORGE'S, Grenada Lawyers for the 13 people convicted of murdering former Grenada Prime Minister Maurice Bishop are expected to continue their submissions today, following an unexplained suspension of the High Court sitting yesterday.
Justice Francis Belle gave no reason for the nearly two-hour adjournment that came during the afternoon session on the third day of the special sitting of the court hearing the arguments in the resentencing of the convicted people who include former Deputy Prime Minister Bernard Coard and former general and commander of the Grenadian Armed Forces, Hudson Austin.
But Director of Public Prosecutions Christopher Nelson had informed the Barbadian judge that new information had come to his attention and it had to be discussed with him as well as Edward Fitzgerald, the lead counsel for the so-called "Grenada 13".
One of the defence lawyers said the new information could result in stopping the hearing, while court registrar Robert Branch said "it came like a bombshell".
But when the court resumed, Justice Belle informed defence attorney Cajeton Hood, who had been making submissions on behalf of Ewart Layne, one of the convicted men, that he would continue today. (CMC)
