Policing not No.1 choice for Bermudans

BERMUDANS' lack of interest in the police force has proven to be a godsend for Barbadian and other regional police constables who are lapping up the lucrative job offers in this affluent Caribbean territory.
Bermuda's Police Commissioner George Jackson, speaking to the SUNDAY SUN on Friday, said after a lull in recruiting officers from other territories for several years, the process had restarted to bolster its ranks.
He said policing was not the No.1 job choice for Bermudans with many of them opting for other areas.
He said the goal in the first instance was to recruit 40 policemen from countries like Barbados, St Lucia, St Vincent, Trinidad as well as Britain who would be offered five-year contracts.
Assurance
The commissioner gave the assurance that the recruitment exercise would not deplete the resources of the various police forces ahead of World Cup Cricket next year.
"The recruitment exercise is in no way designed to deplete the resources of the various forces. The successful officers will be given five-year contracts.
"We are targeting constables who display a leadership role to assist our young force; people who have three or four years' experience in general patrol."
Jackson said he was extremely proud of all of his officers and added that everybody worked together as a team to get the job done.
