'Too much carnage on the road'

FOURTEEN MORE PEOPLE have died in motor vehicle accidents this year than last year.
That information has come from commander in charge of Operation Support, Senior Superintendent Leonard Brome who said that there were 21 accidents resulting in 22 fatalities in 2006.
That figure compares to 27 fatal accidents involving 36 deaths between January and December this year.
The police commander said that the force continued to be concerned about the high incidence of fatalities and he made the point that most were caused from speeding motorists, driving with undue care, overtaking improperly or generally failing to comply with road traffic regulations.
Overall, there was a decline in accidents in 2006 when compared to 2007. Between January and October, last year, there were 7 082 accidents compared to 6 702 in 2007.
For the same period, police charged 20 929 traffic offenders in 2006 compared to 19 320 this year.
"We have seen a decline in the overall figures for the period, but I would still encourage everyone using our roads, and that includes pedestrians, to do so with extra care," Bromes said. (CG)
