Teacher's book to aid in reading

AS PART OF HER CRUSADE to improve the level of reading among students across Barbados, secondary school teacher Glovina Springer has written a book for the teaching of reading.
The handbook, entitled Understanding Reading Instruction, is intended for teachers to be used as a detailed reference for reading.
The St Leonard's Boys' School teacher's first book Elementary Spelling Practice, Book 1, was written for children at the infants' school level, and she said Book 2 in this series should be ready shortly.
She was moved to put out her latest book in response to the growing demand from other teachers who constantly sought her assistance and advice on reading problems they often encountered with students. She hoped it would encourage developmental and recreational reading by children.
Springer said it was important to document the West Indian experiences, "because our classrooms and our educational structures are so differentin some respect from those overseas". (GC)
