Officials not happy with disaster plan for visitors

TOURISM OFFICIALS are still not satisfied that there is a comprehensive plan to house visitors to Barbados during a disaster.
However, president of the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association (BHTA) Alvin Jemmott has given the assurance that talks with the Ministry of Tourism were ongoing.
"It is a subject that will not be brushed aside, not be given our fullest attention," he said while speaking at a breakfast Press briefing at Amaryllis Hotel on Tuesday.
In 2004, Atlantis Hotel in St Joseph and Ocean Spray Apartments lost roofs during the passage of Hurricane Ivan.
Last year, plans were made for the accommodation of guests staying at hotels during the passage of Tropical Storm Emily, which included guests staying in beachfront rooms being moved to a "safe zone" within the hotel.
Jemmott explained that discussions had been held already, but officials were not yet "totally" satisfied there was a comprehensive plan to deal with housing tourists during a disaster.
However, he noted that a recent training workshop was held for industry officials to enable them to manage themselves during a disaster.
"If they can help themselves, they are better able to manage business," he said. (JR-B)
