Versatile Simpson to create sporting history

SHAWN SIMPSON is poised to do what no other sportsman in this country has ever accomplished. He will represent Barbados in two sports at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in Colombia.
The versatile left-hander is already on the squash courts and when competition there is finished, will join the national volleyball team.
It's a remarkable achievement for a 22-year-old. For the last three seasons he has been king of the squash courts, taking national titles in 2004, 2005 and 2006.
And he has been an integral part of the men's volleyball side for the past two years.
Long-serving volleyball analyst and official, Kenmore Bynoe, says Simpson, who plays off-setter, is a special talent.
Tremendous leaping ability
"There can be no doubt about his sporting ability. If he was to commit to volleyball, he would be one of our established starters. He has tremendous leaping ability, has quick arm action and is very aggressive. He gives 110 per cent. Shawn is left-handed and that is an asset for the position he plays," Bynoe said.
The volleyball team leaves here tomorrow morning and will play their opening match against hosts Colombia on Sunday.
Simpson, though, will be busy on the squash courts and is likely to miss that match but the former Combermere student will be available for volleyball duty thereafter. (MK)
