PEEBLES' ATHLETES had a purple patch at the National Stadium yesterday and they returned to their winning ways at the Princess Margaret School Sports with a grand total of 899 points.
Alleyne (Blue) were second on 807, followed by Greenhalgh (Green) with 709 and defending champions Cocks (Red), who slipped from first to last with 699 points.
Victrix ludorum Laneisha Joseph led Peebles to their fourth title in five years following a hat-trick between 2003 and 2005 by winning the senior girls' 400 metres (64.10 seconds) and 800 metres (2:48.93 minutes) to add to her record-breaking run in the 1 500 metres and victory in the shot put.
Joseph also ran an admirable anchor leg in the girls' open medley relay when she came from way behind to overtake Greenhalgh's Jaleesa Burke in the homestretch. Burke had been given a 15-metre lead by housemate Tameka Rawlins, who had a blistering 200-metre third leg.
Records
CARIFTA athlete Rawlins, who has moved up to the under-20 division, had earlier broken the 100 and 200 metres records with the impressive hand-times of 11.29 and 25.17 seconds respectively, as she was chased to the line by the improving Latonya Barker in both races.
Greenhalgh's Carson McCalmon was the victor ludorum, winning the 800 metres (2:14.47 minutes) and breaking the 1 500 metres record in Division 2.
Alleyne housemates Ronald Lucas and Matthew Gittens were joint under-13 boys' champions. Ricky Austin of Peebles was the under-15 boys' champion, while Greenhalgh's Jamar Callender was the under-20 boys' king.
Aziza Clarke of Alleyne and Cocks' Shanice Waldron, who won the 100 (13.27), 200 (27.83) and 400 metres (67.49), were the under-13 and under-15 girls' queens respectively. Rashida Best won the 200 (28.18) and 400 metres (69.25) to be the top under-17 girl.
Back-to-back CARIFTA Games javelin gold medallist Ramon Burgess did not participate in the sports, which were held in honour of retired games teacher Mervyn Jones.
