Squash Nationals start today
Published on: 5/7/08.
NATIONAL PLAYER MARLON WHITE and former Barbados cap Leon Truss will be in action when the 34th edition of the annual Barbados National Squash Championships serves off today.
They are playing in the popular veterans competition which will be held at the Barbados Squash Club. A total of 39 men and ten women have entered this year's championship.
The men's over-40 will once more spark plenty of interest with White, Truss, Nigel Griffith and the durable Mark Sealy certain to dominate this division.
Sealy, who has played Red Stripe Cup cricket and Pan Am Games hockey, is the top seed, while Griffith is ranked second. Neither of them will be in action today, but both the third-seeded White and the fourth-ranked Truss will be on court this evening.
Truss is favoured to get past Michael Best while White is expected to roll over Roger Martin.
Only two players have entered both the Ladies Over-40 and the Men's Over 55 age groups, so these will be straight finals. The Men's Over-35 competition is a round robin affair with the top two seeded players being Mark Gilkes [1] and Norman Rice [2]. The remaining seeded players are as follows:
Men's Over-45 [1] Mickey Armstrong; [2] Craig Archer; [3/4] Dean Straker and Andrew Nunes.
Men's Over-50 [1] Orson Simpson; [2] Cliff Nolan; [3/4] Barry Gale and David Spink.
