ST JOHN'S The Antigua and Barbuda government has offered its support to the People's Republic of China, as the country battles international pressure in the face of the Tibet conflict.
The Baldwin Spencer administration, a supporter of the One China policy and a close ally since 1981, has enjoyed diplomatic and economic relations with mainland China.
"The ministry wishes to reiterate warm congratulations to the People's Republic of China on the imminent hosting of the 2008 Olympic Games," a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Saturday.
"The ministry is of the view that the 2008 Olympics will provide the opportunity for China to build even further a culture of international peace and solidarity among nations.
"Antigua and Barbuda stands with China in its efforts to ensure a successful Olympic Games. The Government of Antigua and Barbuda does not support any efforts to disrupt or politicise the games."
China's Communist government has come under international pressure for its crackdown on protests in the Tibetan capital of Lhasa in recent days. With the conflict spreading to other parts of the country, the government crackdown had led to several deaths, sparking international outrage.
"The ministry continues to believe that, whatever challenges may appear, China will continue in its efforts to maintain peace and the rule of law and order in Tibet so that all the citizens and residents of Tibet can enjoy personal security and a peaceful existence," the statement continued.
"In doing so, China will fulfil its destiny as a truly great nation which will help to shape a more promising and sustainable future for all in the world.
"In the face of these challenges, Antigua and Barbuda and its people stand squarely with the Chinese people in the hope and confidence that resolve and commitment will lead to full peaceful resolution of all issues in Tibet.
"The ministry hopes that those responsible for violence will be held accountable for their actions, and that there can be complete rehabilitation of all affected communities," it added.
"The government of Antigua and Barbuda reaffirms its commitment to the one China policy, recognising the government of the People's Republic of China as the sole legitimate government representing the whole of China." (CMC)
