Records tumble at Sealy Classic

THIRTEEN RECORDS six of them in the middle distances were broken during the eighth Austin Sealy Classic hosted by BC Trac Club last weekend at the National Stadium.
BC Trac's Sonia Gaskin continued her impressive run this season, a comfortable winner of the 600 metres in 1:35.52, shattering the 1:42.9 set by Millicent Maximilien in 1997. Gabiel Ellis of Elite Distance was second in 1:42.86, also within the old time.
Jerrad Mason of Rising Stars had one of the most impressive performances. The 12-year-old clocked 2 minutes, 08.87 seconds, shattering the two-year Under-15 mark of 2:14.29 set by Shaquille Alleyne.
CARIFTA silver medallist Anthonio Mascoll of Pacers returned from injury to win the Under-17 Boys' race in 1:58.80 down from 1:59.31 and Blitz' Sadé Sealy's 2:18.81 replaced the 2:20.2 set by Latoya Griffith back in 2005.
Matthew Wright of Elite Distance set two new records. In the Under-17 Boys' 1500 metres, the CARIFTA Games silver medallist clocked 4:11.59, both he and bronze medallist Ibrahim Hinds (4:12.09) were within the 4:21.5 set in 2005. Wright led the club sweep in the 3 000 metres in a personal best 9:01.33, with Christian Rock (9:16.55), Hinds (9:16.75) and Jason Wilson (9:21.10) all within the 9:32.5 set back in 1997.
In the field events, Akela Jones (5.23 metres) of Springer Memorial, Desirée Crichlow (12.64 metres) and John Jones (15.80 metres), set records in the long jump, triple jump and shot put, respectively.
Raphael Jordan of Rising Stars (14.19) and Quantum Leap's Latoya Griffith (1:01.62) also set records in the Boys' 100-metre hurdles and the women's 400-metre hurdles, while Pacers clocked 3:14.09 in the Men's Open 4x400 metres and British Virgin Islands Fast Lane set a new record 47.05 in the women's 4x100.
