Teen saves neighbour's home from fire

QUICK THINKING by a teenage boy saved his neighbour's home from possible fire damage on Friday.
Mark Hinkson,14, said he was at home when he smelled smoke and ran outside to see smoke coming from the house opposite in Cadogan Road, Grazettes, St Michael.
"I ran over and climbed up the side and went through the window," Hinkson said.
Once inside the house, he saw that the stove was on fire.
He put out the flames, by which time his grandmother had already called the Fire Service.
Divisional Officer Junior Boyce of the Arch Hall Fire Station confirmed there was an electrical fire which was confined to the stove and the extractor.
Boyce said he would urge Barbadians to remember, even if they were leaving the house to go a short distance, to check and make sure their stoves were turned off and all electrical appliances were unplugged.
He said at Christmas time people should be careful not to overload their circuits and also never use indoor lights on the outside of their homes.
"Outdoor lights are for outdoor, and the indoor lights are for indoors. If people put up indoor lights outside and it rains the lights can short-circuit and cause a fire," Boyce said. (SH)
