Victory over Carlton sends St Barnabas to top

Pine Hill St Barnabas moved into the lead in the Barbados Olympic Association' Division One Netball Competition, beating Smalta Carlton 53-38 at the Netball Stadium on Monday night.
Former national player Denise Alleyne led the shooting with 38 goals from 43 attempts (88 per cent) and was assisted by schoolgirls Shekira Boxill, with seven from eight, and Shakira Springer, eight from 16.
Talya Layne had a good night shooting for Carlton, scoring 30 goals from 36 attempts (83 per cent), as did Therese Clarke, eight from 12. However, the real difference came in the attempts where St Barnabas had almost 20 more. Carlton remain in last place.
St Barnabas have 21 points from four victories and one defeat, against Structural Systems Silver Raiders who have a perfect record from four games (20 points). The two teams were scheduled to meet again last night as the second round of matches continued.
In other matches played on Monday night, Guardian Pride of Villa beat the Silver Raiders' Marva Sealy Intermediate 3 team 27-17. National defender Latonya Blackman, back in competition after pregnancy, scored 23 of the goals from 28 attempts, with Nadia Blackman adding the other four.
Silver Raiders tried three shooters Faye Shepherd (six from nine), Amory King (seven from ten) and Carolyn Edwards (four from six) but had no answer.
Tropic Ice Newbury slipped out of second place in the Carolyn Sinckler Intermediate 4 after going down 19-22 to Sports & Games Stars. Former national player Charlene Mathurin scored 13 goals from 20 attempts and Kristina King nine from 21 for the Stars. Beverley Marsh converted 11 goals from 18 attempts and Kimberley Bowen eight from 14 for Newbury.
In the same division, Banks Spurs edged Beverley Hills 23-22, with Sherice Walcott scoring 18 goals from 27 attempts and Under-16 player Shanice Jarvis five from ten. Keisha Griffith scored 16 from 26 and Elly Dasouza six from ten for Beverley Hills.
The Clevedon Mayers Intermediate 6 clash between Flashback and Unity Stars ended in a 19-19 draw. Stefanie Patrick scored seven from 20 and Juann Lewis 12 from 21 for Flashback, while Nikita Wiltshire (ten from 16) and Narita Scantlebury (nine from 18), did the shooting for Unity Stars. (SAT)
