MUMBAI, India The Barbados and West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Smith had a losing debut in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Wednesday when his Mumbai Indians were beaten by one run in a thriller against Kings XI Punjab.
After being sent to bat, Punjab scored 189 for four off their 20 overs, and Mumbai replied with 188 all out off 20 overs.
The result snapped a six-game winning streak for Mumbai, who this week replaced their impressive now unavailable all-rounder Dwayne Bravo with his Caribbean colleague Smith.
Left-hander Shaun Marsh lashed 81 off 56 balls, including seven fours and four sixes, at the top of the Punjab innings. He was later named Man Of The Match
Fellow Australian Luke Pomersbach contributed an equally vital 79 not out off 50 balls, laced with ten fours and three sixes.
Smith, drafted into the side this week when Bravo had to return to the Caribbean for West Indies duties against Australia, bowled two overs that cost 19 runs and then smashed 20 off 16 balls.
He belted pacer Sreesanth for 16 runs in one over including two fours and a smashing six over square leg and appeared poised for a significant contribution until he was run out. (CMC)
