THE FUTURE STARS OF CYCLING in Barbados reaped a harvest in Trinidad and Tobago over the past few days, raking in a whopping 34 medals at the 2006 Junior Caribbean Cycling Gold Cup.
Six-year-old Tremaine Forde-Catwell led the conquest with eight golds and a trophy as the Most Outstanding BMX Rider.
Barbados Cycling Union (BCU) public relations officer, Colin Forde, hailed the performances as outstanding.
"This is part of the the BCU's developmental programme which started last year and we are now seeing the benefits of it. It has been a splendid team effort with the majority of the team making their mark on the track," he said.
A team of 20 competed in BMX racing, tiny mites, juveniles, juniors and the women's categories.
The BMX category was for riders five-years-and-under to 13-years-and-under; tinymites 13-to-14; juveniles 15-16 and juniors 17-18.
"Catwell rode very well in his category and all credit should be given to him, but this was a team effort. Quincy Jones was outstanding in the juniors and special note should be made of Javed Mounter in the tiny mites, Kevin Downie and Jamal Clarke in the juniors and Christal Springer in the girls' division," Forde added.
Jones, who was voted the Most Outstanding Junior, rode away with five golds while Dwayne Bellamy was the top juvenile.
The 'A' team of Jamal Clarke, Jones and Downie captured the team sprint while the 'B' team of Bellamy, Shane Weekes and Christopher Codrington was third.
The team returned home Monday night accompanied by coach/mechanic Delroy Newton and manager, Eudene Clarke. (MK)
