TWO OF Barbados' junior surfers have made it into the second round of the International Surfing Association (ISA) Quiksilver World Junior Surfing Championships
in France.
Ametza Nicholls and Chelsea Tuach are flying the Barbadian flag high as they prepare to go head to head with higher-ranked surfers today, Day 2 of the competition.
On Day 1, Nicholls, surfing in Heat 6, was a close second with a score of 6.17 points, behind Alexis Poulter of New Zealand who won the heat with 7.84 points.
Tuach, who was in the water in Heat 22, was also second, but with a score of 4.96 points behind the eventual winner from United States who posted 15.57.
However, when the competition resumes the girls will come up against stiffer opponents.
Nicholls will be in Heat 3 and she will surf against girls from Australia, France and Portugal.
Tuach surfs in the second last heat of the day, Heat 11, and she will pit her skills against surfers from Brazil, United States and Britain.
Nicholls and Tuach, who are ranked first and second respectively in the local Open Division, were awarded ISA surfing scholarships earlier this year, which also earned them the title of world-wide surfing ambassadors.
Nicholls is the reigning Under-18 girls' champion and Tuach the Under-12 champion.
Head coach Nick Donawa was quoted on the ISA website as saying:
"We came with nine surfers and two are advancing."
The other team members are into the repercharge rounds where they must surf again in the hope of making it back into the competition.
The competition took a break yesterday due to poor surf conditions. Conditions are, however, expected to pick back up today. (HLE)
