A GOOD DOSE of common sense, a strong resistance to the temptation of corruption, and being well versed in conflict resolution, are just three of the main ingredients to successful policing.
It also helps lawmen to be "consistently aware" of their role and responsibilities in the communities they serve as well as the framework of law and justice in which they operate.
This was Attorney-General and Minister of Home Affairs Dale Marshall's advice to the 46 recruits who graduated from the Regional Police Training Centre, Seawell, Christ Church, on Wednesday evening.
Thirty-eight are members of the local force, three from the Royal British Virgin Islands Police Force, and five from the Royal Montserrat Police Force.
Marshall, addressing his first parade since he became Attorney-General in February, said that common sense was the best tool or weapon that exists.
"You must be sensible on confronting danger. You must be co-operative with one another and with other law enforcement and security personnel.
"You must be strong enough to resist the temptation of seduction and of attractive blandishments which lead to corruption. You must always, in your behaviour, whether in or out of uniform, set the highest standards, for the rest of the community is watching you," he said.
He urged the group to respect themselves, colleagues, families, and to respect the right of fellow citizens.
Commissioner of Police Darwin Dottin, who is also the director of training, urged the new constables to use every opportunity to further develop their skills, educate themselves and enrich their lives.
He also told them: "Do not be afraid to engage your peers and senior officers in rigorous and stimulating debate on those issues that impact on your profession. However, do not limit your discussion or search for knowledge to police related topics, for to do so will limit your complete development."
The Most Outstanding Recruit was PC1780 Joseph Green who copped the coveted Baton of Honour as well as several other awards.
