BWU 'not rushing the brush'

THE BARBADOS WORKERS' UNION (BWU) doesn't intend to "rush the brush".
It is waiting patiently to discuss a number of issues with the ruling Democratic Labour Party (DLP).
Among those issues are the establishment of a monument to labour and the issue of labour relations, said BWU general secretary, Sir Roy Trotman.
Speaking at the union's Labour College at Mangrove, St Philip, after the opening ceremony of the Errol Barrow Day Fun Day on Monday, Sir Roy said the most recent discussion about the monument to labour was on May Day, 2007, when former Prime Minister Owen Arthur made a public statement indicating that it would be a part of his Government's actions for the 2007 to 2008 year.
However, he said: :There is now a new Government, and we will have to wait to have discussions with the [David] Thompson administration. We need to give them time to reorganise their planning for Barbados. The congress can't rush to them."
Sir Roy however gave the assurance that the congress would have discussions with Government soon, and would indicate matters of interest for the short and medium term.
With reference to labour relations, the general secretary said that Prime Minister Thompson would want to meet with the Social Partners, but he would determine the time.
"This [too] would be worked out in a mature manner. The discussion will continue. One should not want to rush the brush," the general secretary said. (JR-B)
