MIDFIELDER Malcolm "Buju" Marshall's first goal in three seasons was a special one as Weymouth Wales sent Premier League leaders Gera-Tec Maxwell crashing out of the Barbados Football Association's (BFA) Knockout Cup.
Before one of the largest crowds for a 4 p.m. game at the YMCA, Division 1 side Wales, with former president Keith "Jolla" Barrow watching, stunned their Christ Church opponents with a 2-1 upset victory yesterday evening.
Fresh from a double strike in last week's 3-1 triumph over Pinelands, striker Shane Welch got on the scoresheet once again as he gave Wales
a 1-0 lead in the
15th minute.
Marshall floated a cross across the Maxwell defence and Welch lashed a right-footed volley past goalkeeper Oliver Hinkson.
Maxwell, playing without key defenders Julian Mottley and Andre Wiltshire as well as midfielders Kevin Daniel and Kenny Sealy, were forced to use oldstager Wendell "Coach" Farrell in the sweeper position.
But they equalised two minutes into the second half when Shane Cox converted a penalty after Randy Barnes was tripped in the area by Mario Lennor.
Maxwell found themselves down to ten men when Justin "Tuffy" Belgrave was ejected for his second bookable offence and the one-man advantage worked in Wales' favour as they got the winning goal in the 69th minute.
Jabar Greene, who displayed some nice touches on the right side, whipped the ball into the penalty area and Marshall met it with a one-timed right foot shot, which was perfectly placed
as it sped past Hinkson at the far post.
With 15 minutes left, Wales lost defender Shawn Clarke, who picked up a second yellow card for wasting time by kicking away the ball but they held on to reach the last 16 teams.
On Saturday, another Premiership side, Technico was ousted from the competition when they lost on penalties to Division 2 side, Dayrell's Road after the scores were locked 2-2 at the end of full and extra-time.
The traditionally-strong Claytons Kola Tonic Notre Dame survived a scare before edging another Division 2 team, Clarke's Hill 2-1 with veteran
John "Nobby" Parris scoring the winning goal in the dying moments.
