NATIONAL ATHLETICS RECORDS just keep falling.
This time, it is Henderson Dottin who broke his own record in the men's high jump at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) Invitational in Texas, the fifth record to fall this season.
Twenty-eight-year-old Dottin, a former student of Deighton Griffith Secondary, cleared 2.25 metres on Saturday, improving on the 2.23 set five years ago. He finished second to Kansas State's Scott Sellers who also cleared 2.25 metres.
Dottin came in at 2.10 metres, but had a brief hurdle at 2.13 which he cleared on the third and final attempt. He settled down and got over 2.16 on the first, passed 2.19 and then needed two attempts at 2.22. He cleared 2.25 metres on the third attempt, but neither he nor Sellers could get over 2.27 metres, the Olympic Games "B" qualifying height.
Also at the meet, UTEP senior Keisha Walkes won the women's shot put with 15.89 metres on her fourth put, more than two metres ahead of the competition. She was second in the discus with 47.83 metres, her fifth throw. Walkes had only two legal throws, the other being 47.22 which would've also been good for second place.
Olympic qualifier Shakera Reece of Rice University was second in the women's 100 metres in 11.61 seconds, but placed down the field in the 200 in 24.14 seconds.
At the Sea Rays Relays, Seidre Forde was second in the triple jump with 12.93 metres and Akinwole Jordan was down the field in the men's 400 metres in 50.49 seconds.
Sheena Gooding, who set a national record of 4 minutes 32.64 in the 1 500 metres recently in Louisiana where she is based, was fourth in the 800 metres in 2:08.06 at the Louisiana State University Invitational. (SAT)
