THE ORGANISER of the Caribbean Film Festival, Monica Renée Cooper, has been remanded to Her Majesty's Prisons Dodds.
The 43-year-old, of 2850 Potomac Avenue, Los Angeles, 90016, California, United States, was first remanded on April 17 after appearing in the District "A" Magistrates' Court before Chief Magistrate Clyde Nicholls.
She was not required to plead to the charge that with intent to default in whole or in part on an existing liability, dishonestly induced TVJ Restaurant Services Limited, her creditor, to wait for payment of $26 000 for restaurant services on April 10.
The woman is represented by attorney Douglas Trotman, who is undertaking efforts to have the money repaid.
Owner of the restaurant Thomas Harris told the court Cooper, who arranged the event, said she would make good by credit card payment. That did not materialise.
When she returned to court on April 22, Trotman explained his client was involved in a function geared towards promoting culture and that her intentions were honourable.
However, she ran into difficulties on the night and the police were called in.
Trotman noted that only $19 302.08 of the $26 000 was raised, and urged the court to grant Cooper bail to enable her to raise the remaining money to repay the restaurant in full.
Trotman said he, Cooper and her family would try to bring the case to a close by today, and pleaded for latitude in the matter.
She was remanded and the case adjourned until today. (JR-B)
