Down to the wire

DESPITE dominating racing last year and having more than half of the 11 horses entered in The Realtors Limited Trophy Condition race on Easter Monday's programme at the Garrison, trainers Liz Deane and William Clarke could still come out the losers at the finish of the 1 100 metres event.
Clarke, who trains for the powerful Lord Michael Taylor/Clifton Racing stable, will be represented by three horses in The Bangor Baron, Eastern Peace and The Welsh Wizard; while Deane, who handles the charges of an equally powerful Aysha Syndicate stable among others, will be looking to the trio of Who's Groovy, Preach To Me and newcomer Sabria Light to turn back the stable's eight other challengers.
Of the five other horses expected to face starter Mark Batson tomorrow, at least three of them have a winning chance and this is what makes the event one of the most competitive of the day's nine-race card.
Best credentials
They are the Boston John-trained Lethal Liesel, the Clayton Greenidge-trained Wash Brook, and Marcus Aurelius, the only creole of the three handled by Peter Arthur.
Of these three, Lethal Liesel seems to have the best credentials having placed second to JakeJakeJake, the best of the imported three-year-olds seen out to date, over tomorrow's distance of 1 100 metres on January 5; and also second behind another useful three-year-old import Messi over a similar distance, on January 26.
Wash Brook is another who could cause some damage. This Faraway Stables-owned colt has been running reasonably well among his peers, but is yet to find the winner's enclosure.
He finished a distant second to Daylight Express over 1 570 metres last race day, and prior to that he placed fourth on three successive occasions behind JakejakeJake (twice) and Messi. He has some early speed and this should serve him well tomorrow.
Creole Marcus Aurelius impressed when winning two races over 1 100 metres as a two-year-old on September 29 and October 13, respectively.
Owned by The Arthur Brothers, this colt was seen as a possible contender for this year's three-year-old classics but he went wrong shortly after placing fifth behind Vandross on November 10. He finished fourth on his return recently and should be a much fitter horse come Monday.
One to watch
Of the three Clarke entries, The bango Baron is probably the one to be on seeing that he is the choice of stable jockey Andy Ward. Also in his favour is the fact that he has been withdrawn from the day's main feature race, The Michael Parravicino Memorial Hopeful Breeders' Stakes & Trophy and being sent here instead.
Stablemate The Welsh Wizard seems to have better credentials than The Bangor Baron, but he has a tendency to walk out of the boxes and this is probably what prompted Ward to opt for The Bangor Baron.
Sir David Seale's Preach To Me is easily the best of Deane's trio of entries. This American-bred colt has been showing improved form with every race and his third-place behind runaway winner Daylight Express Wash Brook second last race day is evidence he is going the right way.
However, he might have his work cut out to reverse placings with Wash Brook and also overcome Lethal Liesel in particular.
There are two newcomers in the race in the Eddie Belle-trained I'mjusttoomuch, and the Roger Parravicino-trained Mystic Moon. Although much is not known about these two newcomers, there have been some encouraging reports about the exercise work being done by the latter.
