THREE TEAMS FROM different divisions Belfield, Lickin Chicken Silver Sands and Eden Stars reached the quarter-finals of the Banks Barbados Football Association's Knock Out Cup with contrasting third-round victories in a triple-header at the YMCA on Sunday night.
Belfield blanked Deacons 3-0 in the opener, while in the second game Premier League side Silver Sands came from two goals down to edge Mak-C Pinelands 3-2. Division 1 leaders Eden Stars triumphed 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out over three-time champions Gall Hill.
Belfield 3, Deacons 0
Tall, slim striker Henderson Richards got his second hat-trick of the competition with goals in the eighth, 41st and 64th minutes to give Belfield bragging rights over their St Michael neighbours.
The last two goals by Richards, who also scored a treble in his team's second-round victory over the National Under-17 team, were identical as he dribbled the Deacons goalkeeper each time after receiving passes from Ryan Miller.
Silver Sands 3, Pinelands 2
Second half substitute Ryan Brewster was Silver Sands' saviour with a brilliant hat-trick that probably saved coach Rodney Yarde his job.
Silver Sands had been stung in the 24th minute by their former striker Peter Stoute, who lashed a powerful shot past goalkeeper Rhawn Cox after receiving a pass from Jason Mounter who was used in a new role as striker, as Pinelands took a 1-0 lead.
Five minutes into the second half, Lionel Paul, who had caused plenty of problems for Silver Sands with his deft dribbles and neat moves, found Mounter inside the penalty area with a surgical pass and the former national under-21 defender drilled his shot past Cox.
Triple-substitution
In a desperation move, coach Yarde, who was heavily criticised by Silver Sands fans for leaving his best strikers on the bench, made a triple-substitution in the 56th minute.
Brewster, Troy Callender and Jamar Harewood came on to replace Victor Yarde, Timothy Waldron and Conrick Ashton.
Immediately, Silver Sands looked a more energetic outfit in attack and started to run at the Pinelands defence, which was being marshalled by Rasheed Ames and Romel Severin.
A pass from Harewood was picked up by Callender who somehow hit the upright with his near post shot but Brewster was on the doorstep to slot home the rebound.
Pinelands goalkeeper Romaine Primus was kept very busy and came up with some magnificent saves to deny Brewster, Harewood and Callender, who also had a goal disallowed for off-side.
At the other end, Paul, after pushing the ball through Ryan Ashby's legs, set Stoute free but he hammered his shot high over the bars.
But Silver Sands finally got the equaliser when Brewster headed in a right side cross from Paul Lovell to send the match into extra-time.
Primus made his only mistake of the game when he mistimed his jump as a shot on the volley by Brewster bounced over his head and into the back
of the nets.
Eden Stars 4, Gall Hill 3 penalty shoot-out (1-1 at extra-time)
In the feature match, Jeremy Bradshaw squeezed the ball past Gall Hill goalkeeper Sylvannus Doyle in the 25th minute to give Eden Stars, who had to replace reliable sweeper Rickey Layne with Dale Collymore, a 1-0 lead at half-time.
Jason Goodridge made amends for his indecision in the first half when he failed to take a shot after Sherwin Success knocked a ball around the Eden Stars defence with a lovely 25-yard left-foot shot, which sailed past goalkeeper Tazieo Riley to level the score at 1-1 in the 64th minute.
Eden Stars had a golden opportunity to take the lead again when Bradshaw was fouled in the area by Carlos Nicholls but veteran David Hood's tame penalty kick was easily saved by Doyle.
Neither team could get the winner in extra-time but Eden Stars were more accurate from the penalty spot with Collymore, Richard Hunte, Andre Pinder and Anthony Forde converting even though Kerry Forde and custodian Riley, who saved two of Gall Hill's penalty kicks, missed their attempts.
